How Does A Gyro Stabiliser Work?

Quick Gyros use a vertically spinning flywheel design to stop the roll of the vessel.

In simple terms a Quick gyroscopic stabiliser works like the tyres on a bicycle or motorcycle. While the tyres on a bike are spinning, the bike stays upright. When the wheels on the bike stop spinning, the bike falls over.

Using the same simple physics, the round metal mass of the Quick gyroscopic stabilisers spins and the force it generates (anti-roll torque) is delivered to the structure of the vessel. The bigger and heavier the boat, the bigger the gyro needs to be to ensure is delivers sufficient anti-roll torque to eliminate the roll of the vessel in any conditions.

This clever patented vertical spinning mass design is unique to Quick Gyros and it comes with significant comparative advantages.

NO NEED FOR ALL THE COMPLEX SYSTEMS AND EXPENSIVE YEARLY SERVICING

Unlike horizontal spinning gyro designs where there is only one bearing underneath doing all the work, the Quick Gyro simply spins the mass vertically and has two bearings (one on each side of the mass) that work together and share the weight and force of the mass. This unique design detail means our mass can be bigger and spin slower than our competitor gyros to deliver the same anti-roll torque.

This slower spin speed means less noise, faster spool up time as well as eliminating the need for lots of complex systems including the vacuum chamber, essential if you need to achieve the high spin speeds typical of horizontal spinning gyros. The slower spin speed also means lower bearing temperatures and lower bearing wear, as well as eliminating the need for other systems like break bushings, cooling pumps, heat exchangers that all need expensive regular servicing. Quick Gyros are thereby simpler, smaller and smarter.

ADAPTIVE PRECESSION THAT RESPONDS TO VESSEL MOVEMENT TO DELIVER MARKET LEADING ANTI-ROLL PERORMANCE

The precession system on Quick Gyros is responsive to the roll of the vessel.

As the vessel starts to roll, the precession system of the Quick Gyro responds instantly by changing the proportional valve settings and thereby the response and resistance to the roll of the vessel. Unlike gyros that have no precession control or no precession monitoring, this system guarantees the Quick Gyro will deliver the best possible anti-roll performance in small chop as well as in big heavy seas.

Regardless of the angle of roll and the roll period of a specific vessel, the Quick Gyro delivers the highest possible anti-roll torque at precisely the right moment to reduce vessel roll.

It’s important to understand the difference between the gyro products so you don’t waste your money on a gyro that isn’t adaptive and can’t deliver maximum anti-roll performance in all conditions.

MARKET LEADING PERFORMANCE AT ANY SPEED AND IN ANY SEA CONDITIONS

Unlike any other gyroscopic stabiliser on the market, the Quick Gyro mass spins vertically. This unique feature means the bow of the vessel and the manoeuvrability of the vessel is never restricted by the spinning flywheel.

Other manufacturers of gyroscopic stabilisers recommend you switch off your gyro if the vessel is travelling at over 20kn, or  if you are in big seas where the swell is over 2m. However, with a Quick gyro you can use the gyro at any vessel speed and in any sea conditions.

Furthermore the unique vertically spinning mass design has been shown to not only improve the ride over chop, waves or when crossing the wake from other boats, but also actually reduce track deviation in beam or following seas.

He accurately measured the reduced track deviation at nearly 20%! A Quick Gyro therefore delivers reduced fuel consumption, as well as a more comfortable and safer ride regardless of conditions.

SIMPLE AIR COOLED SYSTEM

Because the mass of the Quick Gyro spins slower than the mass in other gyro brands, our bearings operate at far lower temperatures. This means Quick Gyros will happily operate in ambient air temperatures of up to 55°c. This means you can install Quick Gyros in the engine room between the engines, in a lazarette or even under the floor or under seating.

The small compact design of the Quick Gyros make it easy to find a spot for the gyro in any vessel and you are not cutting more holes in the bottom of your boat or worrying about pumps, strainers and anodes.

DON’T BE FORCED TO USE THE WRONG GYRO MODEL

Quick Gyros are the most compact gyros on the market.

Starting from the X2 and X3 mini gyros at just 42cm square that deliver a staggering 3900N-m of anti-roll torque, we have 13 different gyro models / sizes to suit any style or size of vessel. This means you are not forced to use a gyro with insufficient anti-roll torque for your boat simply because the next gyro size up is too big and does not physically fit in your vessel.

Don’t spend money on an ill-fitting gyro to then be forced to compromise. Our compact design means you can choose the right gyro that delivers the correct amount of anti-roll torque for your vessel so you can enjoy the best possible performance regardless of the sea conditions.
